by Alan Fenech - editorial@di-ve.comSpeaking of the rent laws, the PL leader said the government identified the problem but the solution it is proposing is wrong. The government is proposing a minimum rent of €185.
“For some this could be a small amount but for others it might be the fatal blow. Whatever the amount to be paid there will be people who will be affected badly and the government must assure that this does not occur," said Dr Muscat.
Dr Muscat said that it was the government’s duty to make sure that those at a disadvantage were protected while assuring that neither the owner nor the tenant suffered.
“The government is proposing a generational reform which excludes and does not protect the different family forms. This does not make sense. When we say these things we might not gain popularity but it is our duty to protect the minorities in the country,” said the PL leader.
With regards to the new utility tariffs, the Leader of the Opposition lauded the unions for having given a directive to families not to pay the utility bills before the legal term expired since citizens were having to make good for the inefficiencies and financial deficit of the government.
Dr Muscat also criticised the health sector saying that the country was lagging behind in such a department. “Today we are living in a situation in which those who can afford to pay for treatment are getting it but those who cannot are being denied the treatment required.” He also added that the health sector was dominated by long waiting lists with nurses who do not know how to speak Maltese.
Asked about the MEP elections in June, the PL leader the part would be announcing the final list of candidates in the coming days.
The elections, he said, would coincide with a time of great change within the party. He said there would be 3 phases.
"The first is to understand how our political beliefs make us different from the PN. Next, we have to see how to implement this principle in practice as it is only in this way that the PL can harvest the fruit and success for our country and people,” said Dr Muscat.
The Leader of the Opposition went on to speak of pairing. “Due to the lack of will on the government’s part there is no chance for pairing at this point in time. Debates about the electoral law, the government’s role prior to a general election and the financing of the political parties should commence as soon as possible.”
