Labour calls for child welfare department
The Labour Party is proposing the establishment of a department of child welfare, to safeguard the wellbeing of children.
In a statement, family spokesman Justyne Caruana said that the recent Child Poverty Action Group report, where Malta was ranked last on child wellbeing, was a clear indication that greater efforts to address child welfare were needed.
Therefore, the Labour MP suggested, government needed to set up a department dedicated to child welfare. With the department’s establishment, she said, the Commissioner for Children’s task to ensure that children’s rights were safeguarded could be better carried out, ensuring an effective implementation of the United Nations’ convention on children’s rights.
