The Maltese people woke up early Wednesday morning to find no power being fed to their homes.
Enemalta said that at 0615h one of the main switchgear suffered as yet an unidentified fault that resulted in an explosion that caused both Power Stations to trip down.
Fire engines and an ambulance were seen on the site but there were no casualties as the fire was put out by an automatic system.
Mater Dei Hospital also lost electricity and mobile phone systems were also hit.
Power was lost at 0615h but supply to Mater Dei Hospital, Marsascala, Bulebel, Cospicua, Fgura, Sta Lucia, Gudja, Ghaxaq and parts of Zejtun, Tarxien and Valletta started being restored by 0730h.
By 0800h, electricity was also restored to Zabbar, Ricasoli, Hal-Far, Zejtun, parts of Marsa, Floriana and Valletta. By 0900h, power was also retored to the rest of Marsa, Floriana and Tarxien and to parts of Birzebbuga. Shortly after, Enemalta confirmed that power was also restored to Lija and parts of Mosta, Xemxija, Mgarr, Zebbiegh and Mellieha.
By 0930h, power was restored to Gozo, Ghadira, Marfa and Comino and by 0945h to Rabat, Ta’ Qali, Mdina and Dingli, to ST Microelectronics and parts of Ta’ Xbiex, Gżira, Sliema.
By 1025h, power was restored to Qormi, Mrieħel, Xwieki, Għargħur, St Venera, Iklin, Naxxar, Salina, Magħtab, Burmarrad and Pembroke, and to parts of St Julians and Paceville
By 1109h, power was fully restored.
The police warned that many traffic lights were not working due to the power cut and asked drivers to remain alert.
