There were 372 marriage separations in the first 9 months of the year, compared to 519 for the whole of 2008.

Replying to a Parliamentary Question by MP Anthony Agius Decelis, Minister Austin Gatt said that 1,729 people had registered their wedding between January and September.

188 marriages were annulled in Malta during 2008, of which 35 were religious annulments. During 2008, the Maltese authorities recognised 31 divorces obtained abroad, many of which obtained by couples who had been married for over 20 years.

A total of 519 separations were registered during the year, a 19 per cent decrease over 2007 levels. Nearly 90 per cent of separations involved couples where both spouses were Maltese citizens.
