Around 6,000 smart electricity and water metres have been installed in households across the country to run Smart system feasibility tests.

They have so far been installed in parts of Valletta, Gzira, Ibrag, Swieqi, Madliena, Mosta, Zebbug (Gozo) , Mdina, Kirkop and Senglea, Communications Minister Austin Gatt told Parliament.

He said that the installation of the meters is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Following the feasibility testing, all the country’s electricity and water meters, 480,000 in all, will be installed by 2012 at a cost of around €47 million.

The feasibility pilot-project will provide information on problem areas in terms of meter installation. Malta will be the first country to adopt the Smart metering system across the board.

Automated Revenue Management Systems Ltd, (Arms Ltd) the company running the pilot project was set up following a strategic partnership between Enemalta and the Water Services Corporation.

The company teamed up with IBM to provide the experience to Maltese IT professionals creating the sophisticated systems. The Maltese experience will serve as a leverage to develop similar programmes in other countries.
