The Malta Maritime Authority has issued a request for proposals for the management and operations of temporary marinas in Xemxija and Salina for a period of 5 years, while a call for a temporary marina in Kalkara is set to be issued in the coming days.
The arrangement will provide extra capacity required to handle peaks in demand for berthing spaces during the summer season. It will involve the installation of temporary facilities during summer and their removal in winter.

The selected operators will be required to invest in mooring infrastructure and organise the mooring areas in a configuration approved by the MMA. They also have to provide a range of services including berthing assistance and the provision of supplies.

“The MMA’s objective is to provide the right conditions and environment for the yachting industry to grow and prosper through the maximisation of our coastal and land limitations. Through such arrangements, we should be in a better position to service both the local boating community as well as visiting yachtsmen to establish the islands as a hub for temporary stopovers within this specific niche market,” CEO Stanley Portelli commented.

The preview document can be downloaded from www.mma.gov.mt, and proposals will be received up to December 18.

The MMA also said that the Royal Malta Yacht Club has submitted an application to develop a temporary marina in Ta’ Xbiex as part of their new yacht club.
