Bearing the slogan “European citizenship: not just words, but also concrete rights!”, the campaign will be touring 5 locations until December 1. It will stay in Valletta on Thursday and Friday, moving to Sliema on Saturday, Gozo on Sunday, Mosta on Monday and Vittoriosa on its final day.
The campaign started in Romania in September 2008, and has since also moved through Germany, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Slovakia.
“We want to inform Maltese citizens about the added-value of European citizenship: rights, freedoms and possibilities from which they can benefit in their daily lives,” Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot said.
“This campaign aims to enhance the promotion of EU citizens' rights and guarantee their respect.”
Among other rights, EU citizenship grants holders the right to vote and stand as a candidate in local and European elections at their member state of residence, to petition to the European Parliament, to require protection by the embassy or consulate of any EU member state as well as freely move and reside anywhere within the EU.
