Gozitan singer Deborah C is this year’s Independence Song Contest winner with "Jekk Nuzaw Mohhna", a song composed by Mark Spiteri-Lucas and written by Joe Chircop. A dance-oriented song that deals with making the right decisions in different circumstances, "Jekk Nuzaw Mohhna" also won the hearts of the televoting audience, as it got the most votes.

Visibly elated with this success, Deborah C stated that she could not believe she got so far, despite being considered as a strong contender. “This festival was really competitive as there were many good entries,” she said.

Deborah C is currently at university pursuing a B.A. in Maltese and Communications. This was her third victory at this festival and the fifth for Mark Spiteri-Lucas. Over the past four years, the Ghajnsielem singer’s fame increased considerably thanks to her popular songs, including "Pandora" and "Fjamma". Backstage, at the Floriana Granaries, a calmer Deborah C stated that she has no long-term plans for her music career and will be concentrating on her studies.

Sarah Bonnici won the Youth Category with "Zghazagh bil-Bnadar", written by Joe Chircop and composed by Miriam Christine Borg. Roseanne Cordina won the online voting section with "Demm ta’ Raymond", which recalls Raymond Caruana’s tragic shooting at the Gudja Nationalist Party Club back in 1986. This song is another Mark Spiteri-Lucas composition with lyrics penned by Paul Ellul.

The Independence Song Contest has become a popular song festivals over the past few years. This 24th edition attracted scores of new talents with preliminary rounds commencing in March, with the final featuring 24 finalists, including four participants from the youth section. The festival, hosted by Ron Briffa and Christine Haber, also featured many guests, including this year’s Malta’s Eurovision representative Kurt Calleja, who performed with a five-piece band and DJ Warren Bonello. Kurt performed his new single "Boomerang" and revealed new songs from his forthcoming album, due to be released in December.
