A blockbuster-filled summer

KRS, Malta’s film distributor, revealed that in spite of a summer season filled with quality films and blockbusters, competition from the UEFA Champions League, the Olympic Games, and the stifling summer heat made for a lacklustre turnout in cinemas.

Nevertheless, between July and September, KRS released a total of 39 films, including 27 American productions, 10 from another five countries (the UK, Scotland, Indonesia, Denmark and France), and two co-productions (Australia, the UK and the US). Of those 39 films, seven came out in 3D.

Which were the top five most popular films of the summer?

1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. The Amazing Spider-Man
3. Ted
4. Ice Age 4
5. Brave

The films that topped the weekly box-office charts were Step Up 4, which held the position for four weeks, Ted for three weeks, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises for two , and Ice Age 4 for one.

15 of the films played for more than eight consecutive weeks, with The Hunger Games running for a whopping 22 weeks, followed by Marvel Avengers Assemble and Mirror Mirror, both at 15 weeks, The Lucky One at 14 weeks, Dark Shadows, The Dictator, and The Amazing Spider-Man at 13 weeks, and Ice Age 4 and Safe House at 12 weeks.

The 10 most popular film of the summer broken down by genre included five action films, two animations, two comedies and one drama.
