President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso has congratulated Prime Minister elect Joseph Muscat for the electoral success obtained in the Maltese elections.

Jose Manuel Barroso said: "In my own name and on behalf of the European Commission, I congratulate Dr Joseph Muscat for the electoral result obtained. Dr Joseph Muscat can count on the continued commitment of the European Commission to work side by side with Malta and to overcome the challenges we face together as a Union.I wish him every success throughout his mandate."
