PN strongholds register decrease in voter turnout
The Electoral Commission confirmed that approximately 93% of eligible voters cast their vote in the 23rd General Election held on Saturday. The live updates from Saturday's voting day below:
The polling booths opened at 07:00h and closed at 22:00h during which people could cast their vote.
A total of 332,942 voting documents were issued, out of the 332,963 eligible voters, however around 6,500 went unclaimed. With regards to Local Council elections, where voting was also held in half the localities, 17,543 votes remained uncollected. There are a total of 700 ballot boxes and 116 polling stations, and 269 candidates contested the election.
Today marks the end of a nine week electoral campaign, which has seen the two major political parties, the PL and the PN, battle it out to the last minute. The AD have had quite a bit of publicity throughout the campaign and hope to have a member elected to Parliament.
