People have a right to call a referendum
PN has denied allegations put forward by the Federazzjoni Kaccaturi, Nassaba u Konservazzjonisti u l-Kaccaturi San Umbertu that the party is planning a referendum to abolish hunting.
In statement issued by the PN, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi held that the party is in favour of sustainable hunting and trapping. In compliance with the law a referendum would have to be held if requested by 10% of the voters or more, the statement read, explaining that even if not planned, people have a right to request a referendum.
Dr. Gonzi held that the government took the side of local hunters and insisted for their rights within the European Court of Justice and reiterated that PN does not want to abolish hunting and trapping in spring.
