The Party of European Socialists (PES) has “warmly welcomesd” the victory of the Labour Party (PL) and its leader Joseph Muscat in the Maltese general election. The Labour Party is on course to win 55% of the vote.

PES President Sergei Stanishev congratulated the Labour Party, stating that; “this landslide election result is the proof that the Labour Party has the full support of the citizens. After years of destructive conservative policies, this result is a vote of confidence to the progressive program of sustainable economy and social progress led by Joseph Muscat. I am confident that, under his helm, the new Maltese government will bring fair growth and jobs to Malta”.

Mr Stanishev added that today, Malta takes a step forward and Europe takes a step closer to turning left.
