PL call for Restorative Justice Act enforcement
The PL have expressed their discontent at the lack of implementation of the Restorative Justice Act which provides parole for prisoners.
A statement from PL candidate Michael Falzon read that the Act was passed over a year ago, however has yet to be enforced. He argued that this Act should be enforced for the sake of helping prisoners re-enter society, and will keep them on track.
The PL candidate explained that the closing of the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (SATU) has resulted in too few prisoners being able to follow a rehabilitation programme. He stated that the number of prisoners undertaking rehabilitation fell from 50 to 14 because of this.
