Article By: news

The Gozo Cultural Council in collaboration with the Cathedral Chapter hosted the annual Epiphany Concert at the Gozo Cathedral, Victoria.

The Classique Orchestra, under the able direction of Joseph Debrincat, regaled the audience that packed the Gozo Cathedral with a number of Christmas classical pieces and other music. The concert was further enhanced with the participation of two Gozitan sopranos, Claudia Tabone and Rosabelle Pavia.

The concert was presided by the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo and the Cathedral's Archdeacon Mgr Giov. B Gauci. Malta's ambassador to UNESCO, Mgr Dr Joe Vella Gauci and the Gozo Cultural Council's President attended the concert.

The orchestra started the evening with a dazzling medley of Christmas carols, followed by such classics as Adeste Fidelis, Mille Cherubini in Coro by Alois Melichar, a Fastasia on Greensleves by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Tu scendi dalle Stelle by Alfons Maria de’ Liguori, and Gesù Bambino by Pietro Yon. This was followed by the intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and
Bells across the Meadows, that Albert W.Ketelbey, inspired by the churches’ bells, composed in Gozo while on the island during the First World War. Next in the programme was White Christmas by Irving Berlin and A Holy Night by Adolphe Adam. The Sinfonia Pastorale by Emanuele Galea, edited by Joseph Debrincat, enthralled the audience, many of whom had never heard before. A
Christmas Festival of Songs concluded the pleasant evening. The conductor, orchestra, and singers received a standing ovation for which it was regaled with an encore of the concluding piece.
