Would You Wear ...Leather Leggings?
Iggy Fenech is a 24-year-old student and freelance writer. He is the sub-editor of a prominent Maltese fashion magazine and has worked at the Daily Mail's fashion section. He hates overalls and loves cashmere.
I’ve always been a big fan of leather leggings. Their shiny, wet look and gummy texture is an excitement to the senses. Worn well, they can grab the attention of every passer-by, but one wrong move and they unleash Armageddon on the poor, unsuspecting population.
Plus the stars seem to love them! Beyoncé sported hers with a white blouse and salmon blazer with black lapels, while Ke$ha rocked hers with a sequined jacket – although I’m not too sure that was the best red-carpet choice ever! And, in other news, Kim Kardashian obviously didn't make the best-dressed list this time either.
So, should you wear them?
It’s a tricky question. Leggings don’t just look good on ‘super skinny, I-haven’t-had-a-meal-since-the-day-I-turned-12’ people, but they do require a certain physique.
If you’re slim, chances are that leggings will suit you whether you wear them with flats or pumps, as they will hug your legs and show them off to the jealousy of the rest. One important tip, though, is that leggings should always be tight-fitting, if they are loose you will look ridiculous. If you’re a bit curvy, this is the logic: wear high heels so they push your bum up and make your legs look longer and leaner. If done correctly leather leggings will make you look every inch the star you were born to be.
Should you not wear them?
If you are on the chubbier size, then do yourself a favour and don’t wear leggings. Any leggings, leather or otherwise. There is nothing wrong with being curvaceous, but How to Dress Appropriately For Your Figure should be declared a compulsory subject at school. One too many fries + one too many Big Macs = no leggings!
Tips and Hints
If you do choose to brave this look – and there are many of our readers out there who would – then remember:
• Leggings are not pants, so they should not be treated as such! Make sure your top and/or jacket are covering at least half your backside, and try not to wear a top that’s too tight; you might end up looking like a Deutsche wurst.
• If you're going for an all-black look make sure you mix and match the textures. Wear black knitwear or silk tunics, but never-ever black leather with black leather leggings.
The Iggytruth of the Matter is...
If you’re one of those women who’s got skinny legs and a bit of a round belly, wearing leather leggings and oversized knitwear or a coat could really hide that bulge. Wear them with caution however if you’ve got chunky thighs or wide hips. Leggings will emphasize the bits you are probably trying to hide.
