10 individuals from Somalia and Eritrea, including a couple and child, and seven single adult men today departed to the United States under the US Refugee Resettlement Program (USRRP).

On their arrival, they will be assisted by NGOs in the USA to proceed to their final destinations in various states.

This departure brings the total of beneficiaries of international protection who were resettled to the USA from Malta to 1,044 since 2007.

Since the start of the USRRP in 2008, the number of beneficiaries of protection resettled to the United States amounts to 1,016.

233 migrants have been resettled from Malta to the US since the beginning of 2012. More beneficiaries of international protection are expected to leave for the United States in the coming weeks.

These resettlements, and especially the publicity with which they are surrounded, are serving as a pull factor. Mr Lucky Okocha Achebe, a Nigerian illegal immigrant in Malta, has commented on timesofmalta.com: “Half of the pledges made by Europeans last year were failed. Because all Somalians and Eritreans refused to be resettled in Spain, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Portugal, Lativia and other east European countries.” Of course, they prefer to go to the US or Germany or Sweden and they wait until they get lucky. Do Eritreans merit refugee status? Nigerian Mr Lucky Okocha Achebe wrote: “It is not [only] that they came from a very peaceful country, but they also support their government unbelievably... It is impossible for me to believe thousands of people escape without the good will of their rulers... They are clearly sent by president Issayas because he fails to create jobs at home. So they reach Europe and send back 2% of what they earn. All of my Eritrean friends confirmed that to me. If the Maltese refugee commissioner granted them only temporary humanitarian protection no Eritrean will come Malta again. “ And Somali Mr Ahmed Mohammed wrote: “Stop comparing us with Eritreans. Our situations are not the same... They came from a country where the president walks from his office to his home. Here they are favoured because they are in laws with JRS”.
