1,020 beds for the elderly provided this legislature

During this legislature the Government provided 1,020 beds for the elderly needing long term care. There are currenty 3000 employees are employed within the elderly sector. 

The Government bought 418 beds in the PPP scheme.  During the past few months, bed capacity increased at Mellieha and Zejtun Homes for the Elderly and Zammit Clapp Nursing Home.  

This was stated by the Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care Mario Galea whilst inaugurating the new refurbished ward at St Vincent de Paul Residence.

Mario Galea said that the new ward welcomes 41 clients and offers a dementia friendly atmosphere. All work was done by the employees of the St Vincent de Paul Residence.
Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea added that during the year 2012, 1,492 patients were transferred from Mater Dei to institutions under the Department of the Elderly and Community Care. During this year, 119 patients were transferred.

St Vincent de Paul Residence has 1,200 clients and employs around 1,000 employees. During the year, the residence transport section makes around 5,500 trips whilst 21,000 hours are allotted for cleaning per year.

Mario Galea said that 700 kilos of laundry are washed daily and more than 2,000 linens are changed. Each year the carers give a quarter of a million hours of work and physiotherapists pay 6,000 visits each year. He added that each year the maintenance team does 5,500 jobs. The Entertainment section organizes 2,500 events each year.
