1,750 tonnes of glass exported
WasteServ has recently exported 1,750 tonnes of glass for recycling to Portugal where it will be recycled and used in the beverage industry amongst others.
The glass originated from a variety of sources including the disused dump at Wied Fulija as well as Bring In sites and Civic Amenity sites across Malta and Gozo.
Considering the relatively small quantities of glass waste produced locally, it is not feasible to export glass as regularly as plastic, paper and metal exports. In total, only around 2, 500 tonnes of glass waste are produced annually.
CEO of WasteServ Saviour Abela said: “Finding a suitable buyer for glass at an affordable cost is not an easy task. It is also worth mentioning that this was a positive transaction as the export of the material was at no cost to Malta.
The glass was exported through collaboration of Transport Malta, who assisted with the storage, and Malta Shipyards who provided space for loading.
