18,956 Illegal immigrants in the past 13 years
Since 2001, over the past 13 and a half years, 18,956 illegal immigrants have entered Malta by boats. 14,517 males, 2,361 female, 1,686 boys and 392 girls.
In 2001 Malta only 57 male illegal immigrants had entered Malta however that number has fluctuated each year. Lowest figures recorded were in 2010 with 47 having entered the island while the highest figure was in 2008 with 2,775 illegal immigrants.
In 2013, 2,008 illegal immigrants were recorded to have entered Malta while so far this year only 227 were recorded.
This information was given in Parliament by the Minister of Interior and National Security, Emanuel Mallia, who was answering a question asked by Nationalist MP Claudio Grech.
To another question as to when were the first recorded cases of illegal immigration by boat in the country, Minister Mallia said that the first cases were recorded in 1998, although the actual phenomenon had started in 2002.
