The General  Workers Union publication and daily newspaper  l-Orizzont is celebrating its 50 Anniversary from the first edition and an exhibition of the cover page of each anniversary edition has been opened today by the GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb.

The first edition of l-Orizzont hit the newsstands on Monday November 19, 1962 after the Council of the GWU - approved a report put forward by the Union’s Press Board the previous October asking that the GWU starts publishing a daily paper in Maltese.

l-Orizzont started being printed at the GWU’s printing press known as Union Print, which eventually expanded and  moved from Valletta to Marsa. Along the 50 years, the newspaper had 6 editors, starting with Anton Cassar in 1962 who was then followed by Karmenu Micallef, Peter Bartolo, Felix Agius, Frans Ghirxi and the present editor Josef Caruana.

The exhibition portraying the 50 cover pages is open at the GWU building in South Street Valletta.
