5,400 trees planted in Gozo
5,400 trees, 244,000 plants and 31,000 shrubs were planted in Gozo over the past three years, Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono said this morning whilst attending an Arbor Day event at the Zebbug Primary School, Gozo.
These trees were planted in a number of sites including Mgarr Grove and other areas undergoing afforestation as part of the SIMBIOTIC project and Qala.
The activity began with the planting of a number of trees, including citrus trees in the school’s garden and was followed with poetry readings. This is the eighth year that the College of Gozo has celebrated Arbor Day with the help of the Ministry for Gozo, EkoSkola, Hands-on Farming sessions, the Zebbug Local Council and three private companies.
“The trees which have been planted over the years are a sign of the commitment of the Gozitan people towards the environment, who at the same time are contributing to Gozo’s beauty”, the Minister explained. Mayor of Zebbug Nicky Saliba and Commissioner for Children Helen D’Amato were also present.
Aside from the planting of trees, the Ministry for Gozo is rehabilitating Qortin, a quarry site which is no longer in use which will see 9,000 trees planted.
