70,000 People visit Gozo During Santa Maria Week
A total of 70,000 people made use of the ‘Gozo Channel’ ferry in the period of the feast of Santa Marija, an increase of 3% over last year. The number of vehicles registered was of 18,000 meaning an increase of 2.5%.
This was stated by the Minister for Gozo, Anton Refalo, who visited today several commercial establishments in Gozo.
Refalo added that the increase of tourists is not only tied to the week of the feast In fact according to the latest statistics issued by the NSO, Gozo registered an increase in percentage of tourists who spent nights in hotels, with an increase of 7% over 2013 and 22% on 2010.
The minister added that with this positive trend, Gozo is attracting more tourists even in the non-peak months, i.e. between January and May. During these months Gozo accommodated 49% tourists, while there was an increase of 10% of Maltese who visited Gozo and stayed in a hotel or guest house. This increase was facilitated by two initiatives taken by the Gozo Channel in February and May.
"In 2013 the number of nights spent by tourists in Gozo extend to 972 000. We are confident that for the first time in the history of Gozo, we will have a record of one million tourists this year", added the Minister Refalo.
During the courtesy visit, the Minister for Gozo was accompanied by Joe Muscat from the Gozo Tourism Association and Micheal Grech, the President of the Malta Gozo Chamber.
