Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association in meeting with HE President of Malta

Committee members of the Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association (CMEA) had a very cordial and informative meeting with HE Marie Louise Colerio Preca, President of Malta. CMEA was set up in 1996, under Caritas Malta umbrella in liaison with Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Malta.

CMEA have been affiliated with the International Bureau of Epilepsy since 2001. Prof Janet Mifsud, CMEA Advisor, is presently Vice President of the International Executive Committee of IBE; Ms Victoria Dimech, Secretary CMEA, was previously member of the European Executive Committee

CMEA President, Mr Mario Dimech gave an overview of the various activities and initiatives organized by CMEA such as annual in service courses for teachers and LSAs for Ministry of Education since 2004 and seminars for police recruits, doctors, nurses, as well as staff at Dar tal-Providenza, local councils, other agencies and NGOs. CMEA has also organized national conferences on epilepsy every two years since 2002, with over 200 participants each time and has also participated in various EU projects such as Youth Program (EYIE) – Epilepsy Youth in Europe; EU Grundtvig Program (PAMs) – Professionals Allied to Medicine in epilepsy and Leonardo da Vinci Program onTransition of disabled persons from school to work. It has also printed various information leaflets on epilepsy in Maltese, a teacher’s Pack, epilepsy identity cards, diaries and Posters, DVD in Maltese on Epilepsy.

Her Excellency reiterated the importance of such initiatives in order to improve knowledge in Malt about epilepsy and thus reduce stigma, especially among young persons who are very often reluctant to state that they have this condition. She also showed interest in the educational material prepared for educators and the importance that schools are more aware of the unique needs of children with epilepsy. She supported CMEA’s request to have more specialized staff involved the care of persons with epilepsy such as epilepsy nurses and asked that she is kept informed of how the Presidency can assist in promoting the work of the association.

The Committee was accompanied by Mr Albert Buttigieg, Administrator, Caritas Malta.
