Dumping ground fire causes public nuisance

The Civil Protection Department was called to put out a fire after a heap of rubbish was set alight in an empty field between Zabbar and Birgu.

The field has become a dumping ground for unwanted items, and a painful eyesore to residents of the surrounding areas.

A member of the Civil Protection Department told that although the fire was started by the owners of the field, since they had been called by members of the public, they were duty-bound to put the flames out.

However, given the kind of items that were dumped in the field, including old mattresses and a refrigerator, the fire could have posed a serious danger and a health risk, as well as an annoyance to locals.
