Elderly woman made to pay €1,500 for Weetabix and Easter eggs
An elderly woman, 70-years-old, who had claimed to be a kleptomaniac was told to pay €1,500 for a packet of Weetabix and small easter eggs worth €2.50 by the owner of the shop after he caught her stealing.
The owner, Raymond Borg, 45 from Zebbug, was granted bail on Monday morning against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €3,000 after he pleaded not guilty to trying to obtain money from the woman.
Borg also denied harassing and threatening the woman after she was caught stealing small items from the V&F Supermarket in Sliema.
The woman told the police that she had taken a packet of Weetabix from the supermarket without paying and the owner had contacted her and made her pay €1,000.
On another occasion, she took a packet of small Easter eggs to which the owner demanded €500.
She then contacted the chairman of the bank who told her to contact her lawyer. After contacting her lawyer the woman was told to contact the police.
