Environmental risk assessment requested for oil well drilling
An environmental risk assessment has been requested from the company that will drill an exploratory oil well off Malta in the next few months, Minister Joe Mizzi announced this morning. The company has also been requested to provide a contingency plan in the case of an oil spill.
The Minister said that this was the first time that the government had requested a risk assessment and a contingency plan since they were not required according to the contract signed with Mediterranean Oil and Gas. Moreover, a government representative will be monitoring the process directly from the oil rig.
Addressing a conference on oil spill response, sponsored by European Area Economic grants, Minister Mizzi said that Transport Malta will partner the Norwegian Coastal Administration to improve the country’s maritime pollution response since a quarter of the world’s oil was transported through the Mediterranean.
