Ex-Sliema mayor jailed for 1 year
Nikki Dimech, the former Sliema mayor who was accused of fraud and corruption, has been jailed for one year after being found guilty.
The Court presided by Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit believed the version as presented by Stephen Buhagiar in the case against Mr Dimech. Mr Buhagiar was the person who won a tender issued by Sliema Local Council while Mr Dimech was Mayor. Mr Buhagiar had told the court that Mr Dimech had requested a commission of between five and 10 per cent.
It was also revealed that Mr Dimech will be facing new charges in March 2013 on alleged fraud and falsification of cheques to a value of €25,000.
