Gozo commemorates 1948 tragedy at sea
The 64th anniversary of one of the worst tragedies to ever hit Gozo at sea was commemorated today.
24 people lost their lives in 1948 when a vessel loaded with passengers left Marfa for Gozo despite storm weather.
The vessel capsized near Hondoq ir-Rummien and only four passengers made it out of the ordeal alive.
Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono presided over the commemorative ceremony, on board the MV Gaudos.
The ceremony included Mass celebrated by Dr Joseph Sultana, the Archpriest of Gharb. At the end of the ceremony, Minister Debono and some of the victims' family members threw flowers into the sea as a sign of respect.
The commemoration is held every year by the Committee for National and Regional Celebrations within the Ministry for Gozo.
