Heroin addict charged for stealing car and attempting fraud
Stefan Cutajar, 27, from Safi, was charged with stealing a car and attempting to commit fraud.
On July 21, Mr Cutajar, who has a history of heroin abuse, allegedly stole a car belonging to Raymond Borg from the Luqa Industrial Estate.
In the glove compartment of the car, he found a cheque book, out of which he wrote a cheque for €721 for and forged the signatures of Mr Borg and his wife, Rita, which he attempted to cash.
Mr Cutajar, who relapsed on previous sentences, pleaded not guilty but did not ask for bail. Instead, he requested the opportunity to start a programme to kick his drug habit.
Court accepted his request and recommended that he be kept in custody at the forensic unit of Corradino Correctional Facility.
Prosecution was led by Inspector Darren Buhagiar. Lawyers Gianluca Caruana Curran and Gianella de Marco appeared for the accused.
Magistrate Neville Camilleri presided over the case.
