IVF bill debate to start tomorrow in Parliament
The Bill regarding the regularisation of in-vitro fertilisation will be presented for debate in Parliament tomorrow.
It is said that the Bill will safeguard the rights of parents, embryos, and children born of IVF procedures. It will also makes provisions for the service to be offered at Mater Dei Hospital.
The process of IVF has been available for more than 20 years in Malta, but only in private hospitals. The sector is unregulated and prices for procedures are exorbitant
The first comprehensive report to be drawn up about the Bill was published in 2005, and was supposed to be presented by the end of 2011.
Labour leader Joseph Muscat has stressed several times that a Labour government would put a law regulating IVF as one of its main priorities.
