John Bencini resigns from FOR.U.M. President
President of the Forum Union Maltin (FOR.U.M.) John Bencini has resigned from his post however his resignation is not related to his participation in political activities, FOR.U.M. have said.
Mr Bencini informed FOR.U.M of his decision in a letter sent on December 29 last year in which he explained he believes it's time to make space for new people.
In a statement issued by FOR.U.M, General Secretary Paul pace asked Mr Bencini to reconsider his resignation and reiterated that at no time following was Mr. Bencini ever asked to resign. Paul Pace explained that the president's letter of resignation was received over a fortnight before Mr Bencinic participated in a political event.
“The Council of the Forum of Maltese Unions would like to express its gratitude and thank John Bencini for his full dedication towards the welfare and benefit of the workers we represent. It was during the short time that Mr.Bencini was President that FOR.U.M. became recognized internationally and locally. FOR.U.M. are now full members within The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), MCESD, MEUSAC, the Employment Regulations Board and the Centre for Labour Studies,” the statement continued.
Vice-President Chris Attard, has assumed the responsibilities as an interim President until a new president is elected.
In their reaction The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) held that Mr. Bencini’s career in trade unionism will be remembered for his ability to expand the MUT into a Union which today is the third largest in Malta. "Mr. Bencini also played an instrumental role in efforts to unite the trade union movement in Malta," the MUT statement concluded
