As announced by Transport Malta on the start of the Ferry service in the Marsamaxett harbour on October 1, the ferry service was today extended to the Grand Harbour linking the Three Cities to Valletta.

The service coincides with the commissioning of the Lift at Barrakka and users of the ferry shall be entitled to a free use of the lift on the same day as of this Sunday.

The service will provide a very efficient and direct connection for passengers travelling between Cospicua (in front of the Cospicua Regatta Club which landing place is also conveniently close to Vittoriosa) and from Senglea (temporarily from car park near il-Macina) to Valletta (next to Customs House at Lascaris Wharf a few meters away from the Barrakka lift) and vice-versa.

The Grand Harbour ferry service, operated by Marsamxetto Steamferry Services Limited, is a result of the contract signed between Transport Malta and the Operator for the “Provision of Scheduled Maritime Ferry Services for the Grand Harbour and the Port of Marsamxett”. The Operator, chosen through a competitive tender, will now operate the two simultaneous services (one linking Valletta to the Three Cities and another linking Valletta to Sliema) for a period of eight years. While initially operating using existing and smaller vessels the Operator shall be investing into two new vessels within a period of 12 months from the start of the service and will be paying a total of €300,000, to the Authority, over the whole period, for the exclusive use of the landing places. The two services in Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour shall operate simultaneously and to a scheduled service with a minimum trip every half an hour.

Beyond establishing a reliable maritime transport service the service operates regulated tarrifs with discounted prices for children and the elderly. The Operator is obliged to operate the service all year round, with a minimum schedule as follows:

Winter Schedule:
Monday to Saturday: 07:00 hours till 18.00 hours
Sundays and Public Holidays: 10:00 hours till 16:00 hours

Summer Schedule:
Monday to Saturday: 07:00 hours till 19.00 hours
Sundays and Public Holidays: 09:00 hours till 18:00 hours
