A total of €2.9 million were distributed by the Malta Community Chest Fund in 2012 out of the record €3.5 million collected last year. Today, 44 NGOs received the sum of around €900,000 which was distributed by the President of Malta, Dr. George Abela, on behalf of The Malta Community Chest Fund.
The President and Mrs Abela also launched L-Istrina 2013 which for the first time will be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on December 26. This year’s event will be the final L-Istrina under the Presidency of President George Abela and the fifth edition without prizes (L-Istrina bla rigali).
The 2012 audited accounts by Pricewaterhouse Cooper for L-Istrina and KPMG for The Malta Community Chest Fund were also presented. Proceeds from L-Istrina 2012 increased by €421,000 to a record €3.31m (2011: €2.89m) over the previous year while the overall increase in funds distributed by The Malta Community Chest Fund was of €625,000
“The record sum collected last year made it possible to increase by €625,000 the amount of funds distributed to beneficiaries. Assistance to individuals and NGOs increasing by 23% while the assistance for medical care, to persons receiving medical treatment abroad and to persons needing. special equipment increasing by 33%, from €1.07 million to € 1.42 million,” said President Abela.
“Naturally, extra expenses were incurred to augment the revenue but with an added expenditure of just nine per cent, or €72,000, the income increased
by €421,000. The accounts also show a 36% growth in investments due to a prudent investment policy and management. All funds are invested locally”
“Other expenditure, or should I say investment, was made on the property in Mtarfa known as ‘Dar Kenn Ghall-Sahhtek’. This residential home will be
treating persons with eating disorders and obesity and is scheduled to welcome its first patients in January 2014. An independent valuation of the
property assesses the market value of the building at €4.25 million once completed by the end of the year,” added President Abela.
President George Abela also launched the activities for L-Istrina 2013 which will be held on December 26 with a live transmission between noon and midnight on the three main television stations. The activities will start next week with the Piggy Bank Campaign, followed by Tisjir mill-Qalb recipe book, the Fine Arts Auction, The President’s Charity Fun Run, Paqpaqli ghall-L-Istrina and Sports mill-Qalb.
“The main novelty for this year’s L-Istrina is the venue, The Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC), which was chosen for its ample space and versatility for the marathon fund raiser which will also be supported by two satellite venues at SmartCity Malta and the Astra Theatre in Gozo. The activities planned are family oriented to keep with the theme of Christmas and will make this year’s L-Istrina an event not to be missed,” President Abela said.
“L-Istrina 2013 will be bigger and better than ever and we urge people to drive down to SmartCity to experience the atmosphere, visit the MCC for the
family oriented events that will be set up and the Gozitans to congregate in Victoria and participate. Live links from SmartCity and Gozo will be
transmitted frequently throughout the show,” explained President Abela.
A parents and kids area will be set up at the MCC Sacra Infermeria with a winter wonderland theme of candy, Christmas decorations and a general
feeling of being immersed in a Christmas village. Moreover, parents and kids will walk through and experience interaction with Mickey and Minnie,
Cinderella, Snow White and Belle, pirates, Harry Potter, Super Heroes and Father Christmas.
The experience at SmartCity will be amplified this year with the Laguna Walk area being used on the day. The Astra Theatre in Gozo will be responsible to organise a spectacle urging people to drop in and participate.
“L-Istrina is a national event that unites Malta and Gozo for a noble and charitable cause and families are encouraged to visit the MCC and SmartCity on December 26 to participate in L-Istrina 2013 while helping the Malta Community Chest Fund. The public is also urged to participate in the activities planned in the run-up to L-Istrina,” President George Abela concluded.
