16 projects in countries across Africa, South Asia and Central America will benefit from €188,130 of funds which this morning were officially presented to NGOs and religious institutions by Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Zammit Dimech.

This funding is part of what Malta annually dedicates towards development and humanitarian projects as part of its Official Development Assistance (ODA) and the projects will be carried out by Maltese organisations and individuals through their own volunteers and funds.

Minister Zammit Dimech praised the commitment of past and present participants who aim at improving the standard of living of poorer people. The Ministry’s ODA scheme has gained popularity and the quality of projects submitted has also increased.

All applications were assessed by an advisory board made of seven members from the Ministry’s Development Unit as well as members from the general public. Applicants were interviewed by the board and each project was evaluated on a specific set of criteria. The applicant’s capacities to successfully complete the project were also considered.

Many projects such as the construction of schools and youth centres relate to education whilst other projects focus on vocational training, empowerment and capacity building. Children and other vulnerable groups will be given support to pursue their education or be given training in fields such as ICT and trade.
