Over 9,000 diagnosed with cancer in 5 years
More than 9,000 cases of primary malignant cancer were diagnosed in five years and 4,321 people died from cancer during the same period, information tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Health shows.
Replying to a question by MP Deo Debattista, Minister Godfrey Farrugia said that cancer deaths equate to 26.7 per cent of all deaths between 2008 and 2012.
A total of 4,591 women and 4,580 men were diagnosed with cancer in the same five year period.
Dr Farrugia this week announced that the Oncology Centre next to Mater Dei Hospital is expected to start receiving patients in the next few weeks.
