Police escort pregnant mother to hospital in nick of time
Three police officers went beyond their call of duty this morning as they escorted a heavily pregnant woman to hospital after she went into labour while still on the way.
A 42-year old man from Fgura, who was driving the 33-year old woman to hospital, got stuck in heavy traffic at Garibaldi Street, Luqa, at around 07:20h. Upon realising that they would not make it to hospital on time for the birth they called for medical assistance.
A few moments later, PC 1256 Simon Schembri, who was on patrol and heard about the plight of the couple, identified the vehicle. Upon seeing the state of the pregnant woman PC Schembri parked his police motorcycle and asked the father to sit at the back of the vehicle to assist the woman and got behind the steering wheel to drive the couple to hospital. PC Schembri was escorted to Mater Dei by SM 888 Dunstan Camilleri who arrived a few moments later and PS 1437 Norman Xuereb who met his colleagues along the way.
The woman delivered a baby boy a few minutes after her arrival at hospital.
