Police officers awarded for bravery, 26 sergeants appointed
Police Superintendent Stephen Gatt and Police Officer Walter Sheldon were named officers of the year for their efforts to save the lives of three people during the September storm at huge personal risk.
The officers were awarded today during a ceremony held at the Police Headquarters.
Seven other officers were also awarded a certificate of merit wand 26 officers were appointed sergeants, among them nine women.
A certificate of merit was awarded to Emanuel Agius, Emanuel Axiaq, Patrick Farrugia, Mark Muscat, Paul Spiteri, Joseph Zarb and Noel Muscat.
The Paola district was awarded a trophy for reducing criminality by nearly seven per cent when compared to the previous year.
Police Commissioner, John Rizzo, addressed the new sergeants. Also present for the ceremony were Deputy Commissioner, Joseph Cachia, and the Parliamentary Assistant within the Ministry for Home Affairs, Beppe Fenech Adami.
