Prime Minister, Minister sue New Europe for €50,000
Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi, and the Minister for Resources, George Pullicino, have sued New Europe in the First Instance Court of Brussels requesting the court to fine New Europe €50,000 on the grounds that they were offended by an interview with Captain Paul Watson published on February 27, 2012.
New Europe said that the lawsuit was filed with the Belgian Court on 31 July and the first trial took place on 4 September but the Court declared its self not-competent to try this case. The parties are waiting to hear from the judiciary on when and where the next trial will be held.
In the interview, Capt. Watson had alleged that Malta’s tuna industry has the support of the politicians "who are being bribed by tuna fishermen".
New Europe claimed that a letter sent by Minister George Pullicino on 30 April through a law firm was never received.
