Simon Busuttil, PN’s Head of delegation in Brussels presented a report this morning which he said indicated that “two deputies of the Nationalist Party work more than four from the Labour Party.”

The press conference was held by Dr Busuttil and Dr David Casa in order to speak about their third year of work since the start of the 2nd mandate as MEPs in June 2009.

The table of statistics and figures presented on the report compared the work of the Nationalist Party in the European Parliament to that of the Labour party. The information was gathered from the EU website and votewatch, an independent organisation which uses the EU Institutions’ own attendance, voting and activity data to give a full overview of MEP and member state activities.

Dr Busuttil said that when citizens vote for the candidates of EU parliament, they choose individuals who they think will make the biggest difference. Dr Busuttil said that as the figures show, it is “obvious” that PN will.

When asked about the Anti Counterfeit Trade Agreement (ACTA) issue, Dr Busuttil remarked that in the past seven months at the European Parliament in Brussels, while he “followed every meeting held about ACTA”, Labour MEP Edward Scicluna did not attend one.

Dr Busuttil explained that Dr Scicluna “took every opportunity to appear in the media” whilst he did not carry out the “real work”. He argued that they “criticised” them and their actions, then did not “attend a single meeting.”

In a reaction statement, Labour MEP Edward Scicluna said, "Simon Busuttil cannot erase the uturn he took over ACTA. He got it wrong from the first time he and I discussed it at Student House. He said he was for it because it saves Maltese jobs. I argued differently and in favour of  civil liberties. Now, ACTA is dead and buried. I would have thought Simon would be discussing more important current issues such as the looming Excessive Deficit Procedure and its repercussions on Maltese families.”
