Updated (adds video) Gozo ferry terrifies passengers as mooring line snaps, Gozo Channel apologises
Gozo commuters were terrified last night as a mooring line snapped causing the ferry to move out of her berth and the vehicle disembarkation ramp to raise itself trapping vehicles precariously with passengers inside.
Speaking to di-ve.com, Roderick Galea and his girlfriend, Joelle Falzon, said that they had just driven off the ramp at around 22:45h when they heard shouts from the cars behind him, and turned around to see the ramp moving backwards.
By the time Gozo Channel personnel rushed to see what had happened, two vehicles were swivelling on the ramp, a Mitsubishi Mini Pajero was tilted backwards, and a Maruti jeep was tilted forward.
“Although no one was hurt, people were in shock, wondering what happened,” Mr Galea said.
He also overheard people saying that a woman who was inside the ferry was going to fall into the sea, but fell backwards into the ferry instead.
“The ramp was full of oil and grease, so I could not go back or I would have slipped as well,” Mr Galea said.
Gozo Channel apoligised for yesterday’s accident which saw the ramp of the MV Malita elevate itself after a mooring line was damaged.
Immediate action was taken so that a similar accident would not be repeated.
The company apologised for the inconvience caused, especially to the two private cars that were caught on the ramp.
It also promised to conduct an internal inquiry to see what led to the accident and to strenghten its security measures.
