Gerald Galea, 63, from Marsalforn has been charged with the murder of John Spiteri last Wednesday.

The victim was killed after being hit and dragged by the aggressor’s 4x4 following an altercation between them. The two had an argument over the trimming of trees in an area which was to make for a kiosk.

Gerald Galea, who appeared to be calm during the proceedings, pleaded not guilty.

He was also charged with the attempted murder of the victim’s 20-year-old son Matthew Joe and for causing a Daihatsu Terios owned by a third person more than €1164.96, damaging an Isuzu owned by the victim and driving dangerously.

The court heard how the victim's son tried in vain to stop the melee.

John Spiteri died in hospital on Wednesday evening at around 20:30h possibly due to internal bleeding as a result of the injuries caused by Gerald Galea.

The latter was being kept in hospital after also suffering grievous injuries.

Mr Galea did not request bail and has been remanded in custody.

Inspectors Bernard Charles Spiteri and Chris Pullicino prosecuted.
