3rd International Kendo Seminar & Competition: September 12-16.
Although this major international event has now been in existence for some 28 years this is only the third time it has been held in the Maltese Islands and will attract visitors from as far away as Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Ukraine, Bulgaria and the UK who together will gather along with Maltese practitioners to cross ‘Shinai’ their bamboo swords in this amazing cultural activity and traditional Sport of Japan.
Day one will feature an exclusive beach practice held at Golden Bay where the fully armoured fighters will engage in combat like medieval warriors of old in scenes reminiscent of the ‘Siege of Malta’ but using traditional Samurai techniques.
Day two sees the start of the seminar led by Master Masatake Sumi sensei – Hanshi Hachidan (8th Dan) one of the ‘Foremost’ teachers in the Kendo world today. All aspects of this intriguing activity will be covered. Master Sumi will be assisted by other high ranking teachers from Japan & the UK over the 3 days at the University of Malta sports complex in Msida.
Day three sees the high level ‘Enbu ‘ a demonstration of the art of Kendo taking place at the University Sports Complex in front of invited guests and dignitaries performed by the ‘ Masters’ using real swords. There will also be an introduction to the ‘Tea Ceremony’ – Sado by Master, Kyoju Senken Kojiro from the Dai Nippon Sado Gakkai School, a branch of the Ura-Senke since the Meiji Era in Japan. In the evening there will be the ‘Sayonara’ (Farewell party) this year taking place at the 1743 ir-Razzett L-Antik restaurant in Qormi.
Although there is still one day left in this exciting and packed event, this customary gathering of attendees, family & friends will for sure ‘Rock’ well into the early hours.
Finally on Sunday 16, ‘The 3rd Malta Open mixed individual’s Taikai’ an exciting competition for the practitioners of all levels to take part in will close the event.
