Balance between education and sports required for athletes
Due to the short time that athletes have to practice their favourite sports, it is imperative that countries should focus on having in place a well organised system whereby athletes will combine education and the practicing of sports.
There was consensus on the dual career role that athletes should take between Malta’s Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, Stefan Bountempo, and the EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Youth and Sport, Androulla Vassiliou, and the Lithuanian Minister of the Interior, Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas,
Only with such a system will society be investing in these athletes' future and assisting them to lead a normal family life once they end their sporting career.
During the EU Sports Forum held in Lithuania in the last two days, Dr Buontempo had the opportunity to hold various bilateral meetings with delegates from the United Kingdom, Italy, Lithuania and the EU Commission.
