Handball season opens with two lively encounters
La Salle Handball Club claimed the first honours of the season. In the Women’s final, La Salle ZT Developments beat rivals Aloysians Zmerc 20 – 16. The Men’s final, La Salle BHS managed to triumph over Luxol 23 -20.
La Salle ZT Developments started the match on a solid pace and surged ahead in the first five minutes. Aloysians Zmerc fought their way back into the game, nonetheless by the end of the first half La Salle where leading by 3 goals. During the second half, cup holders La Salle were in control. After ten minutes, the score read 13 – 7. Aloysians did their utmost and fought their way back bravely. In the twenty fifth minute, Brenda Camilleri hit the target and managed to reduce the deficit by 1 goal. During the last five minutes, La Salle surged ahead and maintained a four goal lead throughout the rest of the encounter.
The Men’s final was very similar to last season’s knockout final. La Salle BHS clinched a dramatic victory in the final ten minutes over Luxol. The match started with a flowing and a balanced pace. Mid way through the first half Luxol went ahead by three goals and kept such lead throughout the first thirty minutes. Following the break, La Salle BHS tried to fight their way back into the game however Luxol declined to give away their lead. Nevertheless, in the final ten minutes La Salle got back in the game and drew level. Goals from Said and Olschleger put La Salle in front for the first time during the encounter. Luxol tried to fight back but could not penetrate La Salle’s solid defence.
MHA President Mr. Louis Borg Presented the Winner’s trophy to the team captains.
