Lukas Podolski Wants to Win the World Cup for Michael Schumacher
One German sporting legend hopes to win a title for another. According to the Mirror, German forward Lukas Podolski has revealed that he would like to win the World Cup for fellow countryman Michael Schumacher, who has just awoken from a coma after six months in hospital following a horrific skiing accident in the French-alpine town of Meribel in December.
It was announced on Monday afternoon that the 7-time world Formula One champion, was being transferred to a medical facility in Switzerland to begin his long road to recovery.
Podolski, who is a close personal friend of the former F1 driver, speaking last weekend, wished his friend a speedy recovery and said he hoped to honour him by winning the World Cup in Brazil for Germany.
Speaking to Bild, the Arsenal forward said "Michael Schumacher is as crazy about football as we all are."
"Unfortunately he is not doing so well. The DFB (German FA), the team and I continue to wish his family strength. We hope he will be back on his feet soon and eventually he will be able to see one of our matches.
"If we win the World Cup then it is something which could give him some joy.”
Podolski and the rest of his German counterparts begin their World Cup campaign with a clash against rivals Portugal on Monday evening.
