Squash: Borg and Sacco are top Gozitan players in Arkadia Open
More than twenty players from Malta, Gozo, Poland, Russia and England participated in the Arkadia Gozo Squash Open that was held on Saturday at the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz.
Up-and-coming Gozitan player Stephen Borg had a great match against Alexey Smirnov, winning in straight games to make it to the semi-final. He then had to bow out to Malta ladies champion Colette Sultana who was too strong for him.
In the other semi-final, Robert Sultana had the better of Ivan Balzan to set up a thrilling final against his daughter.
The final could not have been closer. With the match tied one game each and 5-5 in the final game, Robert pushed ahead to a 10-6 lead. However, Colette fought back, cancelling four match balls to level the score and then had the opportunity to clinch the title with two match balls of her own. But Robert dug deep to recover the match and finally managed to clinch it 15-13.
In the match for third and fourth place, Ivan Balzan beat Stephen Borg 11-8 11-13 11-9. This was an excellent tournament for Borg who has improved so much over the past year to finish fourth overall.
The 'B' event was won by Mark Sacco who overcame the challenge of fellow Gozitan Manuel Sultana in the final 9-11, 11-5, 11-6. Another Gozitan, George Vassallo, claimed third place against John Salamone Reynaud.
Mr Amand Veranneman, President of the Gozo Squash Association, thanked main sponsors Arkadia and Harrow Malta for organising the tournament. He also thanked Mr Alberto Hormigo Cebolla (General Manager), Ms Hana Daoud (Spa Manager), as well as other staff at the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz for the excellent service and support.
