In light of the upcoming American election, co-founder of social sharing site Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, is doing the unexpected.

He is raising funds for a 1,000 mile trip across the American continent which will in turn raise awareness about internet issues, as he feels these matters are widely being ignored in the 2012 presidential election campaigns.

Ohanian also left his mark by actively participating in the derailment of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which, according to many, was drawn up to limit internet freedom.

He said that the success of Reddit after being launched in 2005 is testimony to the widespread diffusion of the internet and the principle of economic growth. Many companies that are starting up, he said, have the potential to develop into hugely important firms.

This is why there is the need for an Internet Declaration of Freedom, he added. This kind of declaration would give companies the reassurance that the net will never be censored and they will have a fast, accessible, affordable and incessant web.

Ohanian said he would love for the issue to be brought up during the presidential debate and see Obama and Romney pull strings and make it a priority of theirs.

The bus, painted half-red and half-blue, will travel from Denver, Colorado, where the first Presidential debate will take place on October 3, to Danville, Kentucky, and stop in several other places along the way.

The plan is to host meetings for businessmen, promote local start-ups and support the candidates who back up the cause.
